1995 was a prolific year for Shawty Pimp who released more than a dozen underground tapes in the early to mid nineties. In contrast to the rising crunk sound of the time, Pimp carved out his own lane as a producer and rapper. Drawing from a deep well of samples - in part thanks to his father’s record collection - and working with artists like MC Spade and Red Dog, he combined hard hitting Memphis flows and lyrics with laid back and hypnotic productions you can drive slow to. In the age of the internet, access to Shawty Pimp’s previously hard to find catalog has led to its rediscovery, renewed appreciation and some long overdue recognition for Shawty Pimp as one underground Memphis rap’s pioneers.
